The double axe (also known as a Labrys or Pelekys) was a symbol of the thunder-god Zeus and his weapon used to invoke storm. The oldest double axe artifact has been dated 100,000 BC and was found in Paleokastro (Northern Greece) in 1963. The double-axe was a widespread symbol in the Minoan civilization - the first known Greek civilization which peaked at the 2nd millenium BC. Very large Labrys found at the site of Knossos (Crete) were both decorative and sacrificial. Some which are taller than a human being in size were likely used to sacrifice bulls to summon the favor of Zeus. Our extensive double axe jewelry range is hand made in Greece with a high quality finish.
